There are compelling material and ecological reasons why the best Adirondack chairs are made from red cedar, native to Canada. Western red cedar is more suited to outdoor use than any other wood.
Red cedar grows almost exclusively in the moist and cool forests of Canada's west coast in British Columbia and was called the Tree of Life by the Native Americans. The tree was their most important natural product and one of their four sacred plants. Red cedar wood was and still is used to make dwellings, canoes, clothing, containers, tools, and sacred objects such as totem poles.
Thanks to sustainable management of Canada's red cedar forests, stocks are now 20% larger than they were in 1970, for example, even though the wood has become an important ecological raw material for home, furniture, and sauna construction. For us, red cedar is the only choice for the original Adirondack Bear Chairs.
WEATHER RESISTANT : the wood contains antibacterial essential oils that inhibit all weathering processes.
LIGHTWEIGHT : it is one of the lightest softwoods and is therefore ideal for garden furniture and Adirondack chairs that need to be moved from time to time.
STABLE : The wood is incredibly break-resistant and warp-resistant. We can make the chairs from quite thin slats without anything breaking or becoming crooked during use.
BEAUTIFUL: The colors of Western Red Cedar vary from whitish tones to yellowish tones to reddish-brown. This is what gives the wood its special visual appeal .
AROMATIC: The wood smells aromatically of cedar oil, especially after rain. Cedar wood was once placed between woolen clothing to keep moths away.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY : Due to its weather-resistant properties, cedarwood does not require chemical protection against weathering. This protects the environment and your wallet in the long run.
SUSTAINABLE : The red cedar used in the construction of our Adirondack chairs comes from sustainably and ecologically managed forests. Production places far less strain on the environment, water, and air than industrial materials. At the end of its lifespan, the wood decomposes into humus without leaving any residue.
HEALTHY : Cedar oils (thujaplicins), like the aromatic oils of eucalyptus, cloves, cinnamon, and ginger, belong to the group of plant medicinal substances known as terpenoids and have pronounced anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibiotic effects. Thujaplicins are also used in skin protection creams due to their melanogenic properties.
VALUE : There's no question you can find a cheaper chair anywhere. But when you consider durability, aesthetics, feel, and the joy of an environmentally friendly and value-retaining product, these Adirondack chairs are more than worth their price.
